The artist's words
“Le monde est malade” (“The world is sick”) draws its inspiration from a stay the artist made in France. Observing the bins and the waste in the streets, he realised that France and Africa are alike: both experience the same problems and the same suffering. From this reflection came the idea that the whole world is sick. To illustrate this vision, the artist chose to recycle medical materials, such as empty pill blister packs, their packaging and adhesive bandages, which he embedded into the canvas. This choice symbolises both the sickness and the attempted healing of the world. He also tore the canvas at the location of Palestine and Israel, to represent the war raging there. Finally, he declared that whoever owns the work after the war may call him to sew this part back together, a gesture of hope and peace.
